Description
A beautiful large solid silver makara head bangle sourced in the himalayan regions. An unusual version of a classical design, this bangle shows fine carving despite the obvious long term usage. Normally worn in pairs, this piece was found on its own, probably originating from the nomadic shepherds in the western Himalaya. For the modern user, however, it is often more desirable to be able to just wear one bangle and so if we come across unusual, single pieces of this quality we generally try to snap them up!
Makara is a sanskrit word which roughly translates to ‘water dragon’ and is a mythical creature which is generally depicted as half land creature and half water. It is a motif used extensively in temples all over India and Nepal, often as a kind of guardian of the gateways and directions. Its use in jewellery is also extensive and presumably also represents a powerful, protective aspect which is transferred to the wearer. Made of high quality silver, and often heavy, they also serve as a store of wealth for the men and women of the nomadic tribes that wear them.
This piece is large in size so probably best for a big wristed gentleman, although of course the style is eternally unisex and the dimensions are give.
