Description
Striking tribal neck torque from Rajasthan N. India. This beautiful example is made in silver at the back whilst the front is probably a base of copper with a thin plate of silver with a layer of high carat gold gilt applied in traditional methods. For the original wearer this would have given a strong impression of wealth at a relatively low cost whilst also allowing her to wear gold, a sacred metal for the hindu people being associated with the sun. It is fastened at the side with a fixed pin and although it has the patina of a well used item, the whole piece is in good condition with the gold gilding still heavily intact. Also, it is not too small and not too heavy, common problems with jewellery from this area, for people who want not only collect but also to wear.
