Description
A sought after silver pendant depicting a single, stylised cobra, or Naga, from Rajasthan N. India. The simple yet effective image shows the Naga raised up with its hood open, and has a lovely smooth patina indicative of long use. The cobra is seen by the local people as a magical creature with strong protective powers and is often seen decorating the gods and goddess’s, particularly connected with Shiva. A local, nomadic tribe called the Kalbelia are the traditional snake catchers and venom traders who are also famous as dancers, moving from village to village to take out snakes, give blessings and dance for local celebrations. This kind of amulet is becoming increasingly rare to find on the market due to high demand and limited availability.
